Uncovering the glory of Delos (5hrs.)
We will be seeing all the most important archeological finds doing all the spots mentioned in the “Delos Island revealed” tour. Seeing some of the most important living quarters from the 3d-2nd centuries BC.
Luxury mansions with amazingly ornate mosaic floor beds, the drinking water reservoirs, sewage systems and the daily life of this wealthy ancient Greek religious sanctuary devoted to the twin gods Apollo and Artemis became a renowned trading center for the Mediterranean world ending up as cosmopolitan and rich as only myths could describe!
Homers detailed descriptions of this Island only came to reassure the finds of archeologists in their 200 years of discoveries .The excavations still on going today in what is known as a museum Island protected by archeological law and UNESCO.
When we arrive at the impressive theater of the 3rd century BC we will be moving away from the once densely populated living quarters as we slowly start asceding up to higher grounds!
We will be seeing more of these amazingly detailed mosaics in wealthy merchants houses and ksenones (hotels) of those times. Mosaics depicting gods and goddesses, dolphins and humans riding them. Everything myths talk about depicted in the fine craftsmanship and care of the ancient world all frozen in time!
The views will start to get breathtaking as we ascent to the area of the foreign deities right under mount Kynthos , the highest point of the Island.
There we have a decision to make and I will encourage you to say yes to start hiking with me up the ancient steps the ones pilgrims once took to reach the shrines dedicated to Zeus, Athena, and Goddess fortune that once existed on the peak of mount Kynthos.
The view from the peak is that of a breathtaking panoramic landscape!
Revealing all of Delos Island from up high as well as all the Islands surrounding it!
As we start our descent you will have a clear understanding of where we are located in the middle of the Aegean sea and which islands are around you.
Time for a bathroom stop and refreshment as we head to the island’s museum before heading to the sacred lake the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis with its impressive lion sculptures guarding it!
We will be seeing the main Agoras (markets) where a vast array of goods was traded and sold.
Walking through the religious quarters and the temples of the Gods where offerings were placed to honour them!
As we end our tour heading back to the pier where the boat dropped us off, you will feel that you have an in-depth understanding of how this amazing Island used to function in its days of glory! Your memory and camera will have pictures from its highest point to its most well preserved mosaic floors! As we float away a sense fulfilment and joy will surround us!
A day full of history and myths!
